The world has billions of sensors and internet-connected devices that generate large quantities of data every second. Deep Learning works in combination with the Internet of Things (IoT) across many industries and helps businesses analyze patterns in data, perform predictive maintenance, and design reliable and safe devices.

In this hands-on workshop, we will cover the basics of Deep Learning and IoT and walk through fun, interactive exercises for getting started with maker projects in this space. Attendees will learn to use a webcam and a neural network to recognize images, aggregate data, and run real-time IoT analytics. No prior experience with IoT and Deep Learning is required!

Attendees will be asked to bring their own laptops for connecting to the internet for the workshop, or to share.

Pre-workshop set-up instructions:

Prework for Hands on with Deep Learning and IoT

Hardware and Software Requirements

To participate in this workshop, you need:

  1. A laptop with Wi-Fi
  2. A webcam (can be integrated in your laptop)
  3. Google Chrome (and no other!)
  4. A MathWorks account to access MATLAB Online

The workshop uses several other products in addition to MATLAB. You will access MATLAB through a URL generated for this session (to be provided during the workshop) to ensure you have licenses for all required products.

Setup for Hands on with Deep Learning and IoT

These sections detail all required setup to complete before the workshop.

Part I. Set up your MathWorks account

If you don’t have a MathWorks account, you need to create one to get access to MATLAB Online and the material for this event. You will need access to your email on the machine you are using to create an account.

1. Go to: https://www.mathworks.com/mwaccount/ in Google Chrome and click Create Account:

2. Fill out the form with the required information and click Create. Follow the directions for verifying your email address. 3. To complete your registration, click the link in the verification email and fill out the form.

You must check the Online Services Agreement box. You may leave these fields blank: Activation Key or License Number, Sales rep contact, Associate with a license, and Trial.

Part II. Activate your workshop license

The workshop uses several MathWorks products besides MATLAB. Everyone must follow these instructions to access tools and files used in the workshop.

  1. Open a Google Chrome window and go to this address: https://tinyurl.com/WITSSE-2019-DLIOT
  2. Click Activate MATLAB Online.
  3. Log in to MATLAB Online using your MathWorks account. When you are logged in, you will see the MATLABOnline

    interface.

Part III. Download the exercises

Run this command to access the files used in the workshop:

unzip(‘https://tinyurl.com/WITSSE-DLIOT-Exercises’)
