Today, we live in a world where technology is being used to innovate for a very small section of the population, while the majority of the world is exploited and oppressed by tech. AI/AR development is an emerging area of societal concern, especially as it relates to the geographical, cultural, linguistic, political and socio-economic context. Historical and current societal paradigms are crucial to consider as these technologies are being developed. These potentially harmful impacts must be defined, understood and mitigated in order for the tech businesses to retain their social license to operate. Conversely, it is incumbent that AI and AR are designed to amplify societal benefit within those contexts where possible. This is cross disciplinary challenge that must be addressed from both a technical and content perspective.
